Project Description

Kimber & Glen were delighted to be appointed by the R & A for the design of their new Equipment Testing Centre located at Kingbarns Golf Links. Teaming up again with building architects Wellwood Leslie, (who led the planning process,) we were able to provide the client with a full planning service fro the golf element of the project.

Kimber & Glen were subsequently commissioned to complete the project on a design and build basis and the project was completed in 2016.  Since then the building has been completed and is now functioning as the new home of equipment testing for the game of golf outside of the U.S.

We have been working with Paul Kimber since 2014 on the design and construction of our research & testing facility at Allan Robertson House in Kingsbarns, Scotland.

Our world leading facility has been designed to enable testing of all aspects associated with the science of

golf whilst being sustainable and minimising the impact on the local environment. The testing ranges from the evaluation of golf equipment to conformance to the Rules through to testing human golfers. This necessitated the construction of a realistic golf hole within a driving range environment; including high quality greens so that we could measure ground reaction to incoming shots. The facility encompasses a full driving range and a Par 3 golf hole, with additional tees and green targets to enable testing at all distances.

This involved working with Paul & the STRI to develop our own specification for green construction, that provides a more sustainable approach. The facility is progressing with GEO certification for development and is anticipated to be the first UK development to achieve this.

In addition, the facility has been designed to promote education for referees, so the design has integrated a mini hole that provides as many ‘real life’ on course scenarios as possible.

We have been delighted with the way Paul and his team have provided the bespoke service we required at every stage of the design & construction process, delivering the project which was completed in the Spring of 2017. Their considered methodology and attention to detail has been a key part in the successful creation of a world leading facility to the high standards that we expect.

We have no hesitation in recommending Paul and his team to any potential client and expect that we will continue to do so.”
