Project Description
Phase 1 of this project included the bunkering on holes 4 & 8 and the whole back nine holes. Each bunker area was stripped and completely renovated to install a new bunker style that embraces and enhances the heathland character of the course. Every bunker was constructed using a modern liner to ensure consistent playing conditions across the course. Bunker approaches and green surrounds were also recontoured as part of the work to create larger run-off areas around greens increasing shot variety and adding to the challenge and character of the course. The talented and dedicated greenkeeping team at Ladybank G.C. stepped in after the shaping and liner installation was completed to finish off the bunkers and re-turf the stripped areas. The phase 1 bunkers were returned to play in May 2020.
The success of phase 1 of the project was confirmed when Kimber & Glen were invited back to complete the bunkering and green surrounds on the remainder of the front nine in the winter of 2020-2021. The team were afforded more design latitude on the front nine holes which were once regarded as the weaker holes. However, following some extensive design improvements, many of these holes now offer a completely new challenge and visual perspective.
The bunkers and their surrounds were meticulously grown-in by the greenkeepers over the spring and the upgraded course was back in full play by April 2021. This project was accelerated into 2 phases due to the overwhelmingly positive member’s feedback following phase 1 and also to ensure that the new bunkers and turf were fully bedded in time to host Open Qualifying in 2022.
